Belts are one of the most basic components in your vehicle, but they also have some of the most important roles. Our dealership provides fast and efficient belt replacement and maintenance services to keep your vehicle running smoothly. Understanding what these parts do will help you recognize warning signs and avoid problems before they occur.
Types of Belts
There are two basic setups when it comes to belt systems. Your vehicle will include one of these two options:
- Setup #1: multiple belts, including timing belt and drive belt
OR
- Setup #2: a single serpentine belt
In the first setup, different roles are performed by different belts. The internal timing belt connects the crankshaft to the camshaft and controls the motion of the engine’s valves. The drive belt, sometimes called a V-belt, powers a variety of accessories through its implementation of multiple belts, including the water pump, power steering, alternator, and air conditioning.
In the second setup, a single serpentine belt takes the place of the external drive belts. Like its name suggests, the serpentine belt weaves through the gears of the engine to accommodate its many roles. The serpentine belt also lasts a little longer than the individual belts.
Belt Replacement Warning Signs
Even the best belts will wear out over time, and a belt malfunction can cause enormous damage to your engine or other vehicle components. If you take a look under your hood, be sure to check your belts for any fraying, missing ribs (on the serpentine belt) or splitting. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, bring your vehicle into our service department for replacement.
Some warning signs may be noticeable without popping your hood. Squeaking or squealing can indicate a loose or worn-out belt. If you hear slapping, the timing belt could be hitting its cover.
In some instances, your belt(s) may simply need to have its tension adjusted. Some vehicles can self-adjust their belt tension, while others will require manual adjustment. Such activities can be difficult to do on your own. For peace of mind, visit our dealership service department for all of your belt service needs.
